Environmental Policy
1. About This Policy
Ted's Waste Removal is committed to carrying out all waste management activities in a way that protects the environment, prevents pollution, and complies with applicable law.
This policy applies to all staff, drivers, subcontractors, and operations involved in collection, transport, handling, transfer, and disposal of waste.
2. Legal and Governance Framework
Our environmental controls are designed to meet relevant UK and England/Wales legislation (as amended), including:
- Environmental Protection Act 1990 (including Duty of Care requirements)
- Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011 (including waste hierarchy duties)
- Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations
- Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005
- Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989 (carrier framework)
- Any applicable Environment Agency guidance and enforcement standards
We also take account of local authority requirements and operating conditions in our service areas, including Leeds City Council and neighbouring authorities where services are delivered.
3. Environmental Objectives
- Prevent pollution to land, water, and air
- Comply fully with legal duty-of-care obligations
- Maximise reuse, recycling, and recovery where practical
- Minimise waste sent to landfill
- Reduce fuel use and transport emissions through efficient routing
- Maintain high standards of environmental training and supervision
- Improve performance through monitoring and corrective action
4. Waste Hierarchy and Responsible Disposal
We follow the waste hierarchy in all practical decision-making:
- Prevention - avoid avoidable waste wherever possible
- Reuse - prioritise reuse channels when lawful and suitable
- Recycling - segregate key recyclable materials
- Recovery - use recovery routes where recycling is not possible
- Disposal - use disposal as the final option
Waste is transferred only to appropriately authorised facilities and service partners.
5. Duty of Care, Traceability, and Documentation
We maintain robust waste transfer controls and records to support traceability and lawful handling.
- Waste is only transferred to authorised persons/facilities
- Waste descriptions are accurate and sufficient
- Transfer notes and consignment documentation are completed as required
- Records are retained in line with legal and operational requirements
6. Pollution Prevention Controls
- Secure loading and transport of collected waste
- Controls to minimise litter escape, dust, and spillage
- Spill response materials and escalation procedures in place
- Immediate reporting and management review of environmental incidents
- Operational housekeeping standards for vehicles and storage/handling areas
7. Hazardous and Restricted Materials
We do not process prohibited or restricted wastes through standard collections unless specifically agreed and legally compliant.
Where hazardous or specialist waste is accepted, additional identification, handling, transport, and documentation controls are applied.
8. Vehicle, Fuel, and Emissions Management
- Route planning to reduce avoidable mileage and idling
- Planned vehicle maintenance to support efficiency and compliance
- Driver standards that support safe, fuel-efficient operation
- Review of performance trends to reduce environmental impact over time
9. Staff Competence and Contractor Standards
- Environmental and duty-of-care requirements are included in staff induction
- Refresher training is provided where needed
- Supervisors monitor compliance in day-to-day operations
- Contractors and downstream partners must meet equivalent standards
10. Local Authority and Community Considerations
We aim to operate responsibly in all communities we serve by:
- Respecting local access and amenity constraints where notified
- Cooperating with lawful requests from regulators and local authorities
- Responding promptly to environmental concerns and complaints
- Supporting cleaner neighbourhood outcomes through compliant operations
11. Monitoring, Audit, and Continuous Improvement
Environmental performance is reviewed periodically using operational indicators such as:
- Recycling and recovery performance
- Residual disposal trends
- Incident frequency and severity
- Documentation accuracy and completion rates
- Complaint trends and corrective action closure
Continuous Improvement Commitment: We regularly review this policy and associated procedures, and we update controls when legislation, guidance, operations, or risk profiles change.
